What is a surefire way to build your blood back up besides taking iron pills? A friend of mine went to the doctor and was diagnosed with a bleeding ulser, it was cured with nexium and was put iron pills for having a low blood count what else can he do or eat that will help build his blood count back up???

Wilma S replied: "Eat Liver. I think it tastes yukky but it is a good source of iron. I have even heard some people eat it raw to get the best benefit but I would not recommend that."

♥ L J ♥ replied: "Eating a protein rich diet would help. Iron Rich Foods containing Heme Iron Excellent Sources Good Sources Clams Pork Liver Oysters Chicken Liver Mussels Beef Liver Beef Shrimp Sardines Turkey Iron Rich Foods containing Non-Heme Iron Excellent Sources Good Sources Enriched breakfast cereals Cooked beans and lentils Pumpkin seeds Blackstrap Molasses Canned beans Baked potato with skin Enriched pasta Canned asparagus Iron Absorption Enhancers Iron Absorption Inhibitors Meat/fish/poultry Fruits: Orange, Orange Juice, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapefruit etc Vegetables: Broccoli, brussels sprouts, tomato, tomato juice, potato, green & red peppers White wine Red Wine, Coffee & Tea Vegetables: Spinach, chard, beet greens, rhubarb and sweet potato Whole grains and bran Soy products"

Grammy replied: "A bleeding stomach ulcer will certainly deplete red blood cells. Other than taking iron pills eating red meat more often can also help. Have a good steak and chalk it up to better health! Yeah!"

Girlfriend is on Nexium and is vomiting, tastes blood but none is coming up... serious? My girl is 29, she's anemic, she's only had 2 attacks in her life, when she was little and just two weeks ago. She wasn't taking any iron for her blood so that didn't help. She ended up in the hospital for a week, did blood transfusion, gave her iron everyday and soon enough she was back to normal and ready to go. They prescribed her a multivitamin and iron pill to take daily. But they also gave her Nexium to take only for 1 week. It's been 4 days so far and she had been feeling nauseous like she wanted to vomit, but nothing happened, until today where she vomited and tasted blood in her mouth, but there was no blood. She doesn't wanna call E.R. 'cuz she knows they're gonna make a big deal about every thing (they did when she was in the hospital, thats why she overstayed her stay there), and she doesnt wanna spend another week admitted in the hospital, I was there with her all week so I know how institutionalized she felt. Is this serious or just the nexium side effect?

loryntoo replied: "It's serious. Get her back to the doctor."

krennao replied: "I think she should see a doctor in case it is the nexium, or even a phone call and get better advice."

Iron Levels and Reflux Question? Ok during my pregnancy I had very low iron levels so the doctor put me on iron supplements, I also have some really bad problem with heartburn. Doctors think it's GERD but I am not too sure yet. They put me on Nexium for it and I haven't had an episode of chest pain since I have been on it. My question is that will I have to be on this medication for the rest of my life?

Mary J replied: "Life long problem for me. Nexium twice a day for the rest of my life. Hope it isn't the same for you."

Why would a doctor order an abdominal ultrasound to determine internal bleeding? I'll try to be concise: I keeled over 2 months ago because I was severely anemic (normal hemoglobin for women is 12-15... mine was 2 !!!) Anway, while I was in the hospital they did a colonoscopy and an endoscopy to find the source of why I was losing blood - I'm in my sixties, so it wasn't from menstrual period. They did discover that I had esophogitis due to acid reflux that I've had for years. So, they put me on Iron and Nexium to heal the esophogus, etc.) Now (finally) here's my question: Why would the doctor now want me to have an ultrasound (mainly of my liver... and no, I'm not a drinker). He is first having me get a Hepatitis Panel to rule that out. I'm really getting confused.

'tisJustMe replied: "An ultrasound will give them a better view of your organs with a more detailed view. What they've done so far has only allowed them to view your digestive system from the inside out, and that didn't include your liver. To simply give you some pills to address the low levels wouldn't be enough. He doesn't want to give you a band-aid treatment to treat your symptoms, he wants to find the cause and treat it instead. Sounds as if you've got a pretty good doctor. He's being thorough."

mr.answerman replied: "Well they so far have not found the source of the blood loss. This must be done. The ultra-sound is good for finding cystic structures, and maybe growths that may be the source of the blood loss. They are going to search everywhere until it is found and the liver will be part of that investigation. Do the test, find the source. Best of luck"

pharmacymom replied: "If they still haven't found the cause of your anemia, they may be checking your liver for dysfunction. A symptom of liver disease is low red blood cells and hemoglobin (which helps carry oxygen through your blood). They are just ruling out liver disease as a cause of your anemia."

I have anemia. I have had endoscopy.colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy but no bleedings is found, what's next? I am a 55 year old male. I eat a normal healthy diet. I occasionally get fatigued but have had anemia for 6 years. The doctors, gastro, henatologist can find no cause. I take iron tablets and eat red meat and veges so what is next. I am concerned that there appears to be no real reason for the anemia. I would appreciate comments as I am really very concerned. I do have high blood pressure and am taking medication I also have GURD and am taking nexium to reduce the acid flow etc.

Red_F replied: "Do you take a multi vitamin with Chromium Picolinate in it? Chromium is in most vitamins and in 1% of the population it causes your system to not produce red blood cells. I had it happen to me and once I stopped the vitamins, it went away. It took months of testing from Doctors and they never found the cause. I just stopped taking the vitamins and got better. I then asked the Doctor and he explained that Chromium does have that effect in a small percent of the pop."

Linda R replied: "Ask the doctors to evaluate you for lupus. Lupus can cause bone marrow failure. I know, it happened to me and nearly killed me. What you want is a referral to a rheumatologist experienced in lupus."

Monique replied: "i have iron deficiency anemia and it has gotten worse in the past few years. What I done was increased my Vitiam C intake and take the iron pills on an empty stomach. That helps with the iron absorb better and quicker in the body. Is it possible that your other meds are causing it? I know the feeling when they can't explain or figure out why you are the way you are. I hope you find an answer soon."

Miscarriage with PCOS? Its so hard to sit here and write about this. I cant even begin to explain the pain that I feel. I dont know how to go on. I waited 5 long years to get pregnant. When I decided to give us a break, it happened. We finally got pregnant. Didn't even need clomid. The baby stuck and didnt want to leave. My husband and I couldnt have been happier. It was 12 weeks of bliss as I imagined myself as a mommy and finally holding my baby. I loved to see my tummy grow. My husband would talk to my belly and kiss it goodbye every morning. We were so attached and so in love with our baby. Little did I know that it was all comming to an end. I dont understand how God could give me the most beautiful gift and then take it away. I'm trying not to loose faith but I feel so empty and raw inside. Why my baby?...why me? How am I going to go on watching all these pregnant women around me? How will I go on? And how can I continue to have faith in God when he's done this to me? Why? I'm trying to hold it together as best as I can for my husband. I find him crying around the house when he thinks that I'm not paying attention. We're heartbroken. I just want to make him a daddy. I want it so bad...more than I want to breathe. To make things worse I made the mistake of checking my clots...I saw the little body. I touched it...it broke me inside. And to make things worse the rest wont leave my insides. Its still there. I'm supposed to go back to my doctor on Thursday to discuss the next procedure but the doc doesnt think that I need a d&c. I'm thinking that he wants to do another lap surgery and take out my fibroid while he's in there. Can anyone tell me how you went on after this? How long after did you restart metformin? Did you concieve again? How long after? When did you get af after m/c? Did it stick? Did you go to term? my info: 32 years old married for 5 years & together 13 yrs PCOS New large fibroid Hypertension Crohn's Disease Taking: Methyldopa (htn) Toprol xl (htn) Nifedipine (htn) Pentasa (Crohn's) Nexium (just resumed- Crohns) Mercaptopurine (Crohn's) Prenatals (still) Vit B Folic acid Iron (until I stop bleeding so much) Acidophillus (to help w/stomach issues) I've had lap surgery to correct endometriosis up into my fallopian tube. Ovarian drilling to help me ovulate easier. D&C to clean things up.

fishgirl replied: "OMG. My heart is breaking for you as I read this. I wish I had something magic to say to help ease your pain. You are absolutely right. It is not fair. But now is not the time to lose faith. You and your hubby will find a way through this. You need to lean on each other even more now. I will not pretend that I have any of the answers to the questions that you asked, but I will pray that you and your hubby will be blessed with the baby that you deserve."

debbie r replied: "Im so sorry that you are going thru this experience. Your story had me in tears as I was reading it. I know you feel like there is no hope but please don't give up. God has a plan in the making and no one knows why things happen. Just put your faith in him and I promise you he will see you through this. He will never give you something you can't handle. I know right now you don't believe it will happen but it will. Just keep trying. I don't know about the medical things that are going on with you, but let the docs get it all under control and you will have your miracle. God bless you and your husband. And lean on each other thru this time."

10w1d until we meet Grant Ray replied: "You take a lot of meds...maybe that has something to do with it...and you checked your clots..? I don't think that you would have seen a body at 12w."

My Eggo is Preggo! replied: "My heart is with you and your husband. You are very strong for writing this, and while I don't have answers to your questions, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Hang in there! xoxo!"

The answers you seek are not on here... God does things for reason's. Maybe now is just not your time. Prayer does wonderful things...God can help you"

Nicole replied: "I am so sorry to hear that. That breaks my heart just reading it. I know that it doesn't help now, but God does have plans for us. We just don't always know what they are for awhile."

Margarita T replied: "You are on too many medications. And often a miscarriage is your body trying to correct itself for optimal health. Deduce by the meds. you take that a pregnancy would be a disaster for you and baby. Sorry for the loss."

mrsross22 replied: "I agree with the first person, you do take quite a few meds. Is it so necessary to take them all or can you get by without them for a few months? Also don't ever lose faith in God. Something must have been wrong for him to take your baby. Women can get pregnant after having a MC. I tried getting pregnant for the same time as you. Don't let it dishearten you faith though. I am sure God will give you another. Take care and good luck hun!"

SIRENA R replied: "I don't have a medical experience on this but as someone who has birth and adopted children, I would consider registeing wit adoption agency while you try to get pregnant-youlove adopted kids jst as mch. Genes have nothing t do with loving our children-trust me. You and your husband should mourn this loss by communicating with each other and it will be easier to re-focus on the goal in hand... good luck-i'm sure you'll be great parents!!"

Michelle H replied: "Words cannot express how sorry I am to hear about your loss. My family went through this with my brother when he and his wife had difficulty conceiving. Do not think that God has abandoned you. Almost all women miscarry their first child. Our bodies recognize the new fetus as an alien entity and attack it. Most women do not even realize they miscarry because it is common in the first few weeks. AKA only missed period by a week or so. I do not know what procedure the doctor would need to perform to remove the excess, but I hope it is not too invasive. What I do know is that you are at your most fertile for the next two months. Your body now recognizes being pregnant. The most important thing to do is to relax and let God and nature take its course."

Jasmine replied: "First, of all, I'm so sorry for your loss. I know just how hard it is. After trying for five and a half years my hub and I conceived completely naturally. We lost the baby around 9 weeks. Although I was devastated, I clung to God as my lifeline. He saw me through and was very faithful. That was in May of last year. Around Oct I saw a different infertility specialist because I was convinced that I didn't want it to happen again. They diagnosed me with mild PCOS, and I started taking Metformin right away. Then, I got pregnant in June of this year. I had a peace about it, when I didn't really have it about the last pregnancy even from the beginning. I'm now 18 weeks and baby is healthy and kicking around. I just praise God for getting me through the tough times and proving faithful to me through it all. One side note is that I did take Metformin up through week 17. I tried to get off at about 8 weeks and started spotting, so got back on and it stopped. My doc also put me on progesterone suppositories for the first tri and that helped as well. Again, I'm sorry for your loss, but just hang tight to God and He will see you through it."

Been ill for almost 3 years..can anyone help...? Start Date: April 3rd 2007-(still being affected by some symptoms) So I’ve been sick since April 3rd/2007- to the present day. Some of the symptoms have worn off a bit at this present day but I do still deal with them. I’ve been to many doctor's, pharmacists, walk-in clinics and hospitals and I am still not fully diagnosed what is wrong with me....and i can promise you, i am not a hypochondriac.....this all started when I had a cold and developed into the flu bug...I was under a lot of stress with school considering I was graduating and I was on my last month of school which I had a lot of projects and tests on the way...and I became really ill during the beginning of April and it went away in a week..And then reappeared...the thing is...Every time I felt capable of doing school work I would immediately go up to my school and work for hours on end to try and get myself caught up...but then my sickness came back repeatedly..It was awful...the symptoms I’m having are: *constant nausea 24hrs a day (sometimes to the point where I can't get out of bed) (As of now 2009 happens once and a while but not as invasive as it once was) *stomach ache pains (doesn't' happen anymore) *bloating (sometimes) *gas pains (rarely) *eating sometimes relief nausea feeling; but only for a few minutes (doesn't happen anymore) *changes in bowel movements & odor (sometimes) *mucus in bowel (not very often...just recently started, but doesn't happen as often as it did back in 2007) *lump in throat feeling (doesn't happen anymore) *symptoms worsen @ nights (doesn't happen anymore) *after certain bowel movements; nausea will feel 10 times worse than before and will continue on for days (doesn't happen anymore) *sometimes motion (driving) depending on how bad the nausea is on that specific day will make my nausea feel worse and sometimes I feel like I need to pull over on the side of the road feeling like I’m going to be sick (doesn't happen anymore) I've been under a number of medications...and nothing has seemed to work so far... The tests I have received since April 2007 till December 2007 is: *upper G.I x-ray (barium swallow) *complete abdominal ultrasound & limited pelvic: aorta, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, spleen, & kidneys * 4 blood tests * 2 urine tests *esophagastroduodenoscopy aka Stomach endoscope procedure & biopsy ALL OF THESE TESTS CAME BACK NEGATIVE...THEY HAD FOUND NOTHING IRREGULAR IN ANY OF THE TESTS GIVEN. I've been under a number of medications...And nothing has seemed to work so far...The medications I’ve been under are: *gravol *Acidophillis (this medication will give me a few days of relief...But symptoms will reappear) *Zantac *Pepto-Bismol *Marvolon (birth control, currently on) *Nexium *Benadryl *flu shot (2006) *Techna shot (2006) *Gen Alprozolam 0.25 mg (anxiety medication) *ferrous gluconate (elemental iron pills) *bonamie *benefiber (still taking from time to time) *peglyte (bowel cleanse) *penicillin *pariet (reduces stomach acid & used to eliminate helicobacter pylori) *ran-domperidon 10mg (improves motion threw esophagus) *Detox foot pads (I think they may have helped a little but only did 5 foot pads so far) (I've also thought about ordering Dr. Natura detox program which includes colonix & toxin out...and I’ve also heard that depending on how toxic your body is, it can hang onto viruses in your body...So I’m going to try it and see if may help my situation) Possible diagnosis from doctors, pharmacists, family and friends are: *prolonged gastritis *stomach bacterial infection *stomach ulcer *anxiety *stress gastritis *celiac disease *irritable bowel syndrome (from last doctor's visit @ the hospital, he thinks it could be that...but not feeling any better from doing a colon cleansing with PEGLYTE and taking benefiber everyday) *prolonged stomach flu virus ALOT OF THESE POSSIBLE DIAGNOSES HAVE BEEN RULED OUT FROM THE ENDOSCOPE TEST Now i have developed some new symptoms, I've been sick with this constant cold/flu bug since the end of June 2008; I first became ill with an illness in April 2007 and was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome Jan 2008 as well. Ever since June I just started with a sore throat and a general run down feeling, sometimes chills and fever and I would get the stomach flu-like symptoms here and there, at first I thought it was just a basic cold/flu but then it wouldn't go away. But now I've been getting this recurring stomach flu or just cold/flu-like symptoms like before over and over again...the stomach flu has been going on since Dec 2008 until now, I also am anemic, so I am taking iron pills one pill a day 300mg, but my doctor told me to updose to 3 times a day which adds up to 900mg a day. For example: When I became ill with the stomach bug (or seemed like the stomach bug because it felt exactly like the symptoms of it) December of 2008 I not only had it once but it came back 8 more times before I moved onto

Jean replied: "I'm NOT a doctor. Please contact your doctor for proper medical advice. The first thing that popped in my head when reading your story is that you may have what I have; which took me years to get diagnosed, too. Gastroparesis. To find out this diagnosis, a Gastric Emptying Scan (GES) is the best test. An upper endoscopy would not be able to diagnose this condition. I'd contact a gastroenterologist, if you haven't already, to discuss proper medical treatment. Praying you find a diagnosis and get some relief from your symptoms soon. =)"

Does anyone else have IBS? I am 12 weeks pregnant and my IBS has gone crazy? I have been suffering from bowel problems (IBS) for about 3 years, along with heartburn. I had an endoscopy done 3 years ago, ended up in emergency because I couldn't walk because of the pain I was in for a few days. Had no idea what it was. My boss had called my parents to pick me up from work and take me to the hospital straight away. In my test they discovered that the valve of my stomach doesn't close properly- thus the heartburn and my large intestine is longer than it should be. Then I ended up with IBS due to the stress from working full time and studying part time. I had resigned from work due to my health getting worse. HEALTH comes first. Use to get bad spasms that gave me a lot of pain (not been able to walk) and use to get bad diarrhea which resulted in me losing 10kg in a month. After a while, I learned to eat better and keep away from the foods that made my symptoms worse. I got better, still had spasms, but learned to live with them. Now during my pregnancy, I had bad constipation, pain and black stools from FEFOL iron tablets that my GP said to take. I then when the pharmacy and asked which vitamins with folic acid is ok for me to take with IBS. I started taking FABFOL, in which it helped me get rid of my cold. I get bad spasms, in a lot of pain. Get gas, bloating, constipation, burning across my ribs. I cannot handle my IBS during my pregnancy. The doctor said to stop all my tablets such as Nexium fro heartburn and COLOFAC for my IBS (which I only took for emergencies). Peppermint tea does not work much and peppermint tablets give me heartburn. What can I do to relieve these symptoms and pain?

Vicky replied: "I was on Colofac for a while too, and had IBS for about a decade. Now 27 weeks pregnant. Yes, your intestines are going to have a hard time in pregnancy because, well, basically, they're about to get shoved out of the way to make room for the baby. Your stomach in particular will get moved 90 degrees out of alignment and this will increase heartburn. The best way to solve this is to eat 6 small meals a day instead of 3 bigger ones. Steer clear of the normal IBS triggers, and in my case, I simply make 3 portions and divide them in half to eat. Scheduling this is tricky, but it's better than being incapacitated on the bathroom floor in pain. But the IBS cramping is another matter in terms of pregnancy. My solution (and this is going to take some lateral thinking on your behalf) is Massage. I was off the Colofac within a week, and you can do it all yourself. To begin with, it's a slow process, but you know when it's coming on, and you simply have to drop everything and lie down (on the floor is best). Bearing in mind that the lower intestine processes food in a clockwise direction (from your viewpoint) you need to try and regulate the peristalsis. This jump-starts the body into removing the gases and stops the spasms. Follow the intestine all the way around the side of your tummy, from the public bone, along to the right hand side, up to your ribcage, along the top, down the left side (this side hurts the most, don't know why) and to the pelvis again. As you go, keep a rhythmic massage going. I press down twice in one place, then move along 1cm. The trick is to keep a steady, slow tempo (2 each second or less) because you're trying to get the intestines back in rhythm. After 5 minutes you will (hopefully) feel better. Sorry this was so long-winded but I hope it helps!!!!"

♥Mummy Sarah♥ Pregnant Miracle#2 replied: "It sounds like you have a Hiatus hernia- A hiatus hernia is when part of the stomach slides through the diaphragm into your chest. Often they won't cause any problems, but can give you pain and heartburn. Speak to your doctor about the possibility of a Hiatus hernia and they will recommend treatment, in the mean time drink plenty of water, avoid spicy food, caffeine. and anything else which cause acid. xx"
